If you’re trying to avoid pregnancy, understanding your menstrual cycle and recognizing the signs of ovulation are essential.

Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle
A typical menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, though it can vary from 21 to 35 days.
Ovulation is your most fertile window and occurs when an egg is released from the ovary, typically midway through your cycle, around day 14 in a 28-day cycle. However, because every woman’s body is different, tracking ovulation signs is the best way to determine when you’re most likely to get pregnant.
Signs of Ovulation
Your body gives several indicators that ovulation is approaching. Some of the most common signs include:
- Changes in cervical mucus: It becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy, like egg whites.
- Increase in basal body temperature: A slight rise in temperature can indicate ovulation.
- Mild pelvic pain or cramps: Some women feel slight discomfort when the egg is released.
- Increased libido: Many women notice a boost in sexual desire around ovulation.
Why This Matters
Because sperm can live in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, a woman is most likely to become pregnant if she has unprotected sex in the five days leading up to ovulation and on the day of ovulation itself. Understanding this window can help you make informed choices about contraception or family planning.
