By now, the idea of being unexpectedly pregnant is starting to sink in. You have a big decision to make. If you are choosing between abortion and adoption, we’re glad you’re asking this question. Although no one can make this choice for you, getting as much information as possible about both is critical.

Won’t Abortion Make It All Go Away?

Many women say they feel relieved immediately following their abortions. However, many also say that within weeks, months, maybe even years, they begin to feel sadness, grief, and a deep sense of loss.

Only you know how you would respond to abortion. One study revealed that, for at least some women, abortion does have a direct connection to poor mental health. The study showed:

  • Abortion is consistently associated with elevated rates of mental illness compared to women without a history of abortion.
  • The abortion experience directly contributes to mental health problems for at least some women.
  • There are risk factors, such as pre-existing mental illness, that identify women at greatest risk of mental health problems after abortion.

Do you struggle with anxiety or depression? Talk with your healthcare provider before moving ahead with an abortion. Share your concerns about whether abortion is right for you.

Doesn’t Adoption Just Make It Harder?

Some women feel it is too difficult to place their child with another family. Other women think, although not easy, that making an adoption plan was the best thing they could do for their child.

Talking with a reputable adoption coordinator is essential.

Today’s adoptions allow the birth mother (and father, if available) to choose the adoptive couple. By looking through bios of different couples and meeting them, you can find the family that’s right for you.

You can also continue contact with your child and their adoptive family. An open or semi-open adoption lets you and the adoptive family communicate with one another through phone calls, letters, cards, etc. If physically possible, you can arrange personal visits too.

In a national survey, birth mothers said they were happiest with their choice of adoption when:

  • The adoption coordinator thoroughly explained the adoption process to them, so there were no surprises.
  • They didn’t feel coerced in any way.
