You have three options for your pregnancy, but two require you to carry your pregnancy to full term. Abortion is your only option if you want to end your pregnancy.
Before making a decision, take a closer look at all of your options, including abortion. We do not perform or refer for abortion, but we will provide medically-based, factual information about procedures, side effects, and risks.
First: Have You Had an Ultrasound?
You would think a positive pregnancy test and a late period are all you need to know your options, but you need more information. Get an ultrasound to learn the following:
How Far Along Is Your Pregnancy?
The length of time you are pregnant determines some of your options. The FDA only approves abortion drugs (the abortion pill) through 10 weeks of pregnancy (70 days from the first day of your last menstrual period). Other experts advise not using the abortion pill method past nine weeks.
You may need to have a surgical procedure if you are farther along. Abortion providers perform surgical procedures in hospitals or clinics. They usually require dilating (opening) your cervix (which leads to your uterus) and general or local anesthesia.
An ultrasound determines how long you’ve been pregnant.
What If You’ve Miscarried?
If your pregnancy is viable, it is growing with a detectable heartbeat. However, experts estimate that 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. That’s more than one in four pregnancies. Because it takes your body time to return to normal pre-pregnancy hormone levels, it is possible to get a positive pregnancy test after miscarrying.
Ultrasound can either detect a heartbeat or determine if you’ve miscarried.
Where Can I Get a No-Cost Ultrasound?
New Life Pregnancy Resource Center offers limited obstetrical ultrasound exams at no cost to you. If you receive positive pregnancy testing at our center, you may qualify for an ultrasound before you proceed with your options.
What Are My Other Options?
Your two other options are making an adoption plan or choosing to parent.
Placing Your Child for Adoption
Women who aren’t ready to parent but don’t want an abortion choose to place their child for adoption. There can be emotional side effects with adoption, just as there can be with abortion. But in the end, making an adoption plan allows you to have a relationship with your child and their adoptive family.
Adoption costs the birth parents nothing. If you do not have medical insurance, the potential adoptive parents cover all your medical expenses. With an open or semi-open adoption plan, you choose the family that raises your child.
Although we do not handle adoptions directly, we can make recommendations for reputable adoption agencies.
Choosing to Parent
Although parenting may not be part of your plan, with support and education, you can do it. You might be amazed at the many resources available to you.
We offer no-cost parenting classes that provide insight into everything from prenatal care to raising a toddler. When you complete one of our short video classes, you will receive access to our baby boutique, which is full of diapers, wipes, formula, baby clothes, toys, etc.
Our classes also help with job skills, budgeting, nutrition, and more. If you need further assistance, we can provide community referrals, material assistance, and one-on-one mentorships. We are here for you.
