We recommend getting an ultrasound to protect your health and safety. During pregnancy, an ultrasound alerts if the pregnancy is located where it should be and is not ectopic (outside the uterus). Ultrasound imaging is necessary because immediate medical intervention is needed to protect the woman’s health if an ectopic pregnancy occurs.
An ultrasound can also alert women to a potential miscarriage. According to the Mayo Clinic, “About 10 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. But the actual number is likely higher because many miscarriages occur very early in pregnancy — before you might even know about a pregnancy.”
