If you think you may have a sexually transmitted disease (STD), you might be wondering whether it will go away without treatment. Unfortunately, most STDs do not go away on their own, and leaving an infection untreated can lead to long-term health complications.

The good news is that many STDs are treatable and even curable with proper medical care.

If you believe you’ve been exposed or are experiencing symptoms, it’s important to get tested as soon as possible. Early detection enables treatment before the infection causes further harm or spreads to others.

Schedule a confidential appointment today at New Life Pregnancy Resource Center to talk about your situation. We may be able to offer STD testing referrals, and we’re also here to provide early services for women who believe they might be pregnant.

Which STDs Can Go Away on Their Own?

A few viral infections, such as human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B, may go away on their own if your immune system clears the virus.

However, there is no way to know whether that will happen. If they do not clear, these infections can lead to more serious conditions like genital warts, liver disease, or cancer.

Because it’s impossible to predict whether an infection will resolve naturally, regular testing and follow-up with a healthcare provider are essential.

Which STDs Require Treatment?

Most STDs require medical treatment to fully clear the infection or manage symptoms.

  • Bacterial STDs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are curable with antibiotics. (However, they can leave lasting damage like scarring if they are not treated quickly.)
  • Viral STDs like herpes and HIV can’t be cured, but antiviral medications can reduce symptoms, lower transmission risk, and help maintain long-term health.
  • Parasitic infections such as trichomoniasis are treatable with prescribed antibiotics, while scabies and pubic lice (parasites that live on skin) can be fully treated with topical creams or medicated shampoos. Sometimes, doctors prescribe anti-parasitic medications.
