Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are highly contagious and relatively common. They are spread primarily by sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex.

Although millions of new cases appear every year, many people are unaware they have an STD because often there are no symptoms. Without signs or symptoms, people assume there is no reason to get tested, but untreated STDs can lead to serious complications later.

What Are the Facts About STDs?

The American Sexual Health Association (ASHA) explains who is most at risk of getting an STD.

  • STDs pass more easily from men to women than vice versa, which means women have higher rates of STDs.
  • By age 25, one-half of all sexually active young people get an STD.
  • Each year, 9 million new cases of STDs occur among young people aged 15 – 24.
  • About 1 in 4 young adults have an STD. The numbers could be even higher because many people who are infected don’t realize it.
  • Pregnant women with STDs are at greater risk of miscarriage and premature delivery.
  • People of color have a higher rate of STDs due to less access to medical care.
  • The U.S. has the highest STD rates of any country in the industrialized world.

What Are the Most Common STDs?

According to the CDC, some of the most common STDs are chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, HIV, HPV (Human Papillomavirus), and syphilis.

Bacterial STDs, such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, can be easily treated. Early treatment reduces the risk of serious complications later.

Viral STDs, such as herpes, hepatitis B, and HIV, can be effectively treated but cannot be cured. However, by treating the disease, you limit later complications.

Should I Get Tested for an STD?

If you are sexually active, it is possible to get an STD. You need to get tested if:

  • You have had oral, anal, or vaginal sex.
  • You have recently had unprotected sex.
  • Your partner has had multiple partners.
  • You have had a change in partners.
  • You are scheduled to have an abortion. By treating an STD before an abortion, you lower the risk of having an infection spread to other parts of your body.
