It sounds weird to say you can take pictures with sound, but it’s true. That is precisely what an ultrasound scan does. Healthcare providers use ultrasound, also called sonography, for many different reasons.

The medical professionals at New Life Pregnancy Resource Center use it to give you critical information about your pregnancy.

The Ultrasound Process

A limited obstetric ultrasound is a noninvasive procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of a woman’s uterus. The process is quick and easy.

An RN at New Life conducts our ultrasounds. She places a layer of gel on a woman’s abdomen and then rubs a wand-like instrument called a transducer through the gel. The transducer transmits sound waves that bounce off the inside of the body to a computer screen that creates an image.

Why Do I Need an Ultrasound?

A limited obstetric ultrasound answers three fundamental questions about your pregnancy:

1. Is the pregnancy growing, or did I have a miscarriage?

Experts estimate that 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. Most miscarriages occur within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Because it takes a woman’s body time to return to her pre-pregnancy hormone levels, it is possible to get a positive pregnancy test days or even weeks after a miscarriage.

A growing pregnancy is also known as a viable pregnancy. If an ultrasound detects a heartbeat, you have not miscarried, and your pregnancy should continue growing.

2. Where is my pregnancy located?

In a normal pregnancy, when an egg is fertilized, it travels down the fallopian tubes, which lead to the uterus, and implants along the uterine wall. If the pregnancy implants in another location, it is called an ectopic pregnancy.

An ectopic pregnancy can be extremely dangerous and even life-threatening. If you are

diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy, it is vital to visit your healthcare provider as soon

as possible.

3. What is the gestational age?

By taking measurements, an obstetric ultrasound can determine the number of weeks a

woman has been pregnant. This is also referred to as the gestational age. If you are

considering abortion, it is especially critical to know how far along you are. The FDA only

approves abortion pill drugs through 10 weeks of pregnancy.
